JERA
About
A Japanese energy company set up as a joint venture of Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and Chubu Electric Power, and still owned equally by TEPCO Fuel & Power and Chubu Electric Power. It has absorbed both parents' fuel, thermal power and overseas generation businesses and runs an integrated chain from upstream fuel development and trading to power generation. Its renewables arm JERA Nex, which bought the Belgian developer Parkwind in July 2023, combined its offshore wind business with bp's in August 2025 to form JERA Nex bp, a 50:50 joint venture that develops, owns and operates offshore wind projects. By April 2026 the Ishikari Bay New Port farm and the Akita and Aomori developments in Japan had also moved to the joint venture. Those offshore wind assets therefore sit in a half-owned company whose decisions JERA shares with bp.
Outlook
as of 2026-10Japan's largest power generator, a joint venture of TEPCO and Chubu Electric, entered offshore wind cautiously through minority stakes (Gunfleet Sands in the UK in 2018, Formosa 1 and 2 in Taiwan in 2019), then escalated quickly with the EUR 1.55bn acquisition of Parkwind in 2023. It spun out JERA Nex in 2024 as a dedicated renewables platform with a 20 GW by 2035 target, restated in September 2026, and in August 2025 launched a 50:50 joint venture with bp, JERA Nex bp, one of the world's largest offshore wind developers with 13 GW of potential capacity and $5.8bn of committed funding. There have been selective retreats: Formosa 3 in Taiwan on cost concerns, the US market (Beacon Wind) in October 2025, and Morgan (1.5 GW) discontinued while Mona (1.5 GW) was absorbed in January 2026. The Japanese programme now sits in the venture too: JERA's interests in Aomori (615 MW) and the operating Ishikari Bay farm (112 MW) moved in on 1 April 2026, joining Akita (315 MW, operation planned June 2028). JERA says it is pursuing offshore wind through JERA Nex bp with rigorous investment discipline as costs rise.
