About

as of 2026-10

A Norwegian energy company, 67% owned by the Norwegian state, whose reporting is mostly oil and gas: four of its five main segments are Exploration & Production Norway, E&P International, E&P USA, and Marketing, Midstream & Processing. Since the start of 2026 its offshore wind has sat in a Power segment, which joins the former Renewables business with flexible power assets and trading. It is commercialising floating wind and operates two floating farms, Hywind Scotland and Hywind Tampen, the second owned by its Norwegian oil and gas segment. It also holds 10% of Ørsted, as a financial position outside its power portfolio.

Strategic read

The oil major that stayed, at a fraction of its 2021 ambition of 12-16 GW by 2030. The US repricing hit hard: Empire Wind 2's OREC was terminated, Beacon Wind was swapped to BP, and France, Portugal, Spain and Vietnam were exited. The 2025 update halved renewables capex and cut the target to 10-12 GW. In February 2026 Equinor cut the 2026-27 capex outlook by a further USD 4 billion and set a high bar for new offshore wind commitments, the Ørsted stake included. The June 2026 capital markets day gave no capacity target: power is about 10% of capex, aiming at more than 20 TWh by 2030 from sanctioned projects, with new investment shifting gradually to flexible assets. In June Dogger Bank A had all turbines installed, Empire Wind (building under a court injunction) was around 70% complete, and Baltyk 2 and 3 expected all monopiles in 2026; Baltyk 1's CfD and licences for Utsira Nord and the Celtic Sea are options. Equinor expects offshore wind to turn cash flow positive in 2027, says the industry still needs consolidation, and seeks industrial solutions for its Ørsted stake rather than buying shares for cash.

    Q1 2026 results call
“clearly the 10% ownership share that we have, we are satisfied with that. And there's a high bar to commit more capital into offshore wind. And that also goes with the position in Ørsted. When that is said, we do believe that this industry will need consolidation to improve profitability and risk management.”

    Q2 2025 Results — Empire Wind impairment

Equinor recognised a USD 955 million impairment related to its Empire Wind projects in the US in Q2 2025. Of this, USD 763 million related to the Empire Wind 1 / South Brooklyn Marine Terminal project under construction, and USD 192 million to the undeveloped Empire Wind 2 lease. The impairment was driven by reduced expected synergies from future US offshore wind projects, regulatory changes, and increased tariff exposure.
